Hello Bill,
Thanks for the web site and information. I live in Canton NY, next to Clarkson University, great College. I just got hooked up with a business club at the college. We just met the other night for the first time, they will help me do anything I want to do and can do. Web page, marketing etc. Have you any ideas how I could help and guide these students to expand my business. Where I live is a negative, not a lot of people, jobs or money. I do as much process work as I can get, but not doing it for nothing, some will and do. Private investigation is a new service for the area, need to get into the insurance companies and Big Law firms in Syracuse and Albany. I appreciate anything you can offer. Thanks!

Reply to Donald:Donald,
Thanks for taking the time to write. I am at a client site at the moment
and all my BJ Gordon and Company email is forwarded here so don't get
confused with the FPL email address.
That aside, you asked me if I had any ideas how you could help and guide
the students in the business club?
I don't have any ideas unless you have an idea of where your business is
going?
What any person requires from a team of people is something they must
design.
Do you have a clear direction where you want your web page to evolve?
Do you have something that is so needed it would be important to package
and sell it?
If they are going to help you with marketing, what is your market?
I am not being much help because it is your business and you have to know
what your short term and long term plans are.
I work with people who have a clear idea of what they want from their
business but have strayed into doing all of the work for themselves or plan
to.
You have to take the goals and ideas for your business and break them down
into rudimentary parts so this business club can help you one piece at a
time.
You mentioned getting into the large insurance firms in Syracuse and Albany
but do you know why?
What do you want to get out of knowing them?
What kind(s) of work?
What can you provide better, quicker, cheaper than your competition?
How do you plan to:
1. Do the work
2. Manage the work
3. Test the quality of the work
You said where you live is quite negative which works in the positive for a
detective agency.
What goes on in your town?
Lots of cheating
Lots of workman's comp
Too many accident insurance claims
Store robberies
Find out what goes on in your town.
For example: You say, "I want to receive 'injury verification' work from
ABC Insurance in Albany."
That's fine. Now look at what you need to do to get into this cold company.
1. Learn who is in charge. The students should research the insurance firms
in Albany and tell you what kinds of insurance they handle. You may have to
find out what kind(s) of claims they receive and see if you can serve those
needs. You will need to perform your role of an investigator to potential
clients to gleam the results you need to talk to those in charge. Work like
this is relationship building. It will take time but you need the who's who
and then start.
2. Design a marketing campaign to bring your name to the forefront of the
company reps. If you are a total novice in marketing I suggest the small
book, "How to become a marketing superstar". Without a rudimentary
knowledge of marketing you cannot hope of helping any group market for you.
2a. This campaign may include a secure website the adjusters can open at
their desks that show the clients they gave you to verify their injuries
plus any photos. Is something like this unique and easy for the adjuster,
you bet it is. Can your student group help you build it? I bet they can.
Again thank you for writing,
William Ritchotte II
PS. Make sure you buy your company's name as a domain name and get an email
address to go with it. You want to be seen as a professional and having a
webpage and email to go with it is the first start.
