M. Poole wants to know about niche websites that make money.
Dear Bill:
I want to know what a good example of a information website that is currently making some money from ads. Any additional information would be helpful as well. I have time and a little bit of money to put into something since I retired.

Take a look here at this website and minimize my email and the site so you can see both. Please keep reading.

This is an example of how you make money with a niche website.
1. Notice how the website has one relevant topic
2. The table of contents for the site is on the left column
3. In the top middle are the Google Adsense ads which pay you whenever a visitor to the site clicks on an ad.
You cant click on the ads and you cannot have your friends click more than once because Google tracks ip addresses and would think it funny that the same people are clicking and never buying.
4. Below the ads is a relevant article
5. Each link from the left goes to a different relevant article that is set up the same exact way as this home page.
6. The right hand column is an advertiser the website owner set up a relationship with called an affiliation. Related affiliations can be made by a person or found at clickbank.com. These tend to pay more than the pay per click ads but only pay when someone buys something.
Why would people want to go to your site?
People looking for wedding dresses are a solid market year after year. By providing a strong niche and posting articles about a specific subject makes it a resource people will turn to.
Why would people click on an ad?
When a site has some solid information and a store or service to click to, people will click and take a look at the stores that carry them. If the price or quality is right a sale is made.
Was the person who set up the site an expert in wedding dresses?
No. This person (not with my company or related contractors) found articles about wedding dresses and posted them on his site. As long as you give credit to the writer or write your own article it's fine. Of course a person in a niche business that has no passion for it will not see activity after a certain time if the content doesnt change. So it is important to add articles as well as refreshing the ones that are there every month.
Can I do this myself?
Yes and no. People like me know how to set up the back end and marketing structure of the site as well as who to tell once it is ready to go. This site was built in one night. The coolest thing is his affiliate provided the main graphic and other graphics for the front page. He didn't have to create a thing, just put pieces together.
You have to have a niche or two you are passionate about. And be able to write the articles or know where to find them to take and use for yourself. (Again with credit to the writer or publisher)
Does it have to be a website or a blog?
A website is a set area you have purchased to show pages related to topics whether for sale, information, or both. Information that will remain static for a long period of time should go in a website.
A blog is where someone with a passionate knowlege of a subject or really good writing ability on general subject would set up space on the web. A good example is a blog is like a web log or diary of your niche, passion, writing, living. If you can keep the articles coming at least every two weeks then you could have a blog which is a bit easier to find exposure for.
Websites are used as blogs many times because the bloggers want to grow their articles into the hundreds so that many many pages to the site are created and fool search engines into referencing it a lot more.
How much money can reasonably be made from an interesting niche site?
Every one is different and there are higher paying ads than others but let say you had a 1000 people a day going to your site to find some piece of information. With a worldwide market, this is reasonable. If each person clicks an ad that returns 10 cents a click, that's a $100 per day, every day or $36k and change per year. There are others getting 10,000 clicks per day at 2 cents apiece. it all depends on your subject. You can do very bad and very good. It depends on your patience and steady working to make the site known.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can help you with the site creation or marketing. I have people for both or I can teach you to do it yourself. Teaching you is the cheaper route.

PS: My site http://www.bjgordonandcompany.com has both web pages and blogs to separate my static information from my dynamic. Good Luck!
